Avoiding a “Train Wreck” with Weed Resistance
We had a great turnout for our Northern Weed Resistance Forum on March 8th. Dr. Bryan Young, Weed specialist from Southern Illinois University, explained the weed resistance situation in the Midwest and painted a picture of the train that is coming our way. Dr. Jeff Stachler, Weed specialist from NDSU, expressed what farmers can be doing to avoid a train wreck.
- Incorporate the LibertyLink system in your rotation to break up the glyphosate cycle.
- Pre-emergance is extremely important to control troubling weeds.
- In your Chemical Program, avoid using the same modes of action more than once per season. This will start the selection process on the resistant weeds. For instance, if you put down a pre don’t follow up with the same mode of action with your main application of LibertyLink or Roundup.
- Understand how weeds move and spread: Wind, Water (flooding), Birds, and Equipment.
- Be adamant about scouting your fields after spraying. And pay attention to your surroundings, including your neighbor’s fields.
Educate yourself, and then help educate your neighbors about weed resistance and what it could look like if no action is taken soon. We don’t want what is going on in the south to happen here. We need to help preserve Glyphosate as long as we can.
